The two cambered bridges that arc over the sound to Fredvang, with Volandstind rising behind them — the classic view of the mountain is from here. The house, and the far easier route up, are on the other side.

The photo stop, done right

The bridges are narrow and the road across them is live — do not stop on the bridges themselves. Pull fully off the road at the marked spots on either side and walk back for the shot. Early and late light does the mountain the most justice.

The mountain behind them

It is satisfying to say you have stood on top of the silhouette everyone photographs from this roadside. The Volandstind route guide — the back side is a much friendlier climb.

Beyond the bridges

The road continues past Fredvang to the trailheads for Kvalvika and Ryten, and ends at the beach at Yttersand. One road, three of the west’s best reasons.
