Lofoten in summer

The season when everything is open at once — every trail, every beach, every boat — under a sun that barely sets.

A swimmer raises both arms to the midnight sun over a still beach.

Everything works in summer

The mountains are snow-free and green to the ridgelines, wildflowers line the paths, and every trail is in season — from family strolls to the big summits, Reinebringen included. The sea reaches its least-cold (roughly 9–15 °C late in the season), which means short, bright, wonderful swims off white-sand beaches — and with a sauna waiting, a daily habit.

And above it all, the light: the midnight sun from late May to mid-July, and light nights from May into September. Evenings stop having a deadline — dinner drifts late, and a walk at midnight looks like early evening.

Three habits for the bright weeks

Go early or late. July middays at the famous spots are shared; mornings and the light evenings are yours — and an evening ascent is as bright as a midday one, and far quieter.

Base yourself somewhere quiet. The summer crowd concentrates on a handful of spots along the main road. A base on a quiet side fjord gives you the still version of the season — the one with space, silence and your own shoreline for the golden hours.

Book the base early. Summer books first of all seasons; the activities can stay spontaneous, the roof cannot.

A whole summer from our own ground

The month films for June, July and August — the light that never goes out, seen from the property toward Volandstind.

A summer day, done well

One or two experiences, done properly: a summit in the morning or a beach afternoon — Kvalvika’s trailhead is 10 minutes away, Volandstind starts at the door — then the sauna and a swim to reset the legs, dinner outside, and the midnight sun from the dock with a coffee. Surfing is real here too: Lofoten Beach Camp at Brunstranda, minutes from Ramberg, runs courses all summer.

Pack a wool layer and a wind shell even in July — this is the Arctic’s gentle, cool summer, and that coolness is precisely what makes the long bright days so comfortable to live in.

«Truly one of the best — if not the best — family holidays with friends we have ever had.»

Summer, answered

How warm does it get?

Cool and maritime — warm in the sun, jacket-weather in the wind, often on the same walk. In a Europe of ever-hotter summers, this coast is the refreshing version: bright, green and 15–20°.

When exactly is the midnight sun?

Roughly 26–28 May to 14–17 July, with long light nights for weeks either side — the midnight sun guide has the details, including why 01:00 is the hour that matters.

Is it crowded?

Late June to late August is the islands' busy season at the famous spots.

Do we need to book ahead?

The accommodation, yes — summer books first. Most activities can be decided day by day, which suits the weather anyway.
