Lofoten in autumn
Golden hillsides, the first northern lights, dramatic light between the fronts — and the islands at their calmest.

Three months, three moods
September
The overlap month
The only month that fully delivers both hiking and aurora: trails still open, days still long — and from mid-month, every clear night is a northern-lights chance. Golden hillsides, bright birch woods, quiet car parks. The most complete month of the season.
October
The dramatic one
Storm season wakes, and between the fronts October serves the year's most dramatic light: low sun under torn clouds, rainbows over dark sea, fresh snow on the summits. Photographers' favourite — and the coastal walks stay open when the tops close.
November
The quiet threshold
The islands exhale: first lasting snow, long dark nights for the aurora, total stillness. A month for being somewhere warm and beautiful — books, slow food, the sauna, and the sky-watch on clear nights.
Come with a list, not an itinerary
In autumn the weather sets the order of the week — so bring a flexible list: two or three hikes, a couple of drives, a beach walk, a photography wish, and a slow day. Take the good windows when they come, and let the wild days be what they are: the storm watched from a warm room is one of the season’s finest experiences.
This is also the season when a well-equipped house becomes part of the trip. Wet gear goes into the drying cabinet in the evening and comes out ready; the sauna turns a grey, windy afternoon into the best hour of the day; and the dark evenings are made for slow cooking.
What works all autumn
Northern lights from mid-September — improving as the nights lengthen. Beach walks — the drive-to beaches at their emptiest and most impressive. The scenic drives — Reine, Hamnøy, Nusfjord and Å, 20–30 minutes from the house. Hiking — full season in September, the good days of October, then the low coastal walks. Photography — the light of the year.
Casa Lofoten
Autumn at Casa Lofoten
- The aurora from the door: dark side-fjord sky, benches on the hillside — from mid-September, check the sky at dinner.
- The storm seat: the fjord in full weather from a warm living room — then the sauna, a few steps away.
- Drying cabinet and laundry: out in the weather every day, dry gear every morning.
- The season’s kitchen: long evenings, slow food, the fireplace.
September to November is when the house is at its quietest and darkest — and at its best.
Autumn, answered
Can we see the northern lights in September?
Yes — from mid-September, any clear dark night is a real chance, in the mildest temperatures of the aurora season.
Can we still hike?
September fully; October on its good days — and Volandstind, Ryten and Kvalvika are open all year round. Reinebringen's staircase closes for the season.
Is autumn good value?
It is the calm season — flights and stays generally cost less than summer, and the well-located places still book up: quality is in demand all year here.
